The scope of a technical audit is distinct from other types of SEO analysis. It does not evaluate the quality of your written content, the strength of your backlink profile, or the effectiveness of your keyword targeting. Those are important, but they belong to content audits, backlink audits, and keyword research respectively. A technical audit is concerned with infrastructure — the pipes and wiring that deliver your content to search engines.
The output should be a prioritised list with affected URLs or templates, captured evidence, likely consequence, remediation steps, dependencies and a verification method. Impact estimates should state assumptions and confidence; no audit can promise a ranking change from a technical fix.

Crawlability
Robots.txt configuration. Your robots.txt file is the first thing search engine crawlers read when they visit your site. An overly restrictive robots.txt can block entire sections from indexing. An overly permissive one can waste crawl budget on low-value pages. A technical audit verifies that your robots.txt correctly allows access to all important content while blocking administrative, duplicate, and low-value paths.
XML sitemaps. Your sitemap tells search engines which pages exist and which ones you consider most important. A technical audit checks whether your sitemap exists, whether it is referenced in robots.txt, whether all listed URLs return 200 status codes, whether it includes lastmod dates, and whether it excludes pages you do not want indexed. Large sites may need sitemap indexes, and the audit verifies that these are properly structured.
Crawl budget efficiency. Google allocates a finite crawl budget to each site based on its perceived importance and server capacity. A technical audit identifies factors that waste crawl budget: redirect chains, soft 404 errors, duplicate content accessible through multiple URLs, infinite crawl traps from dynamic parameters, and faceted navigation that generates millions of indexable URL combinations.
Indexability
Canonical configuration. Canonical tags tell search engines which version of a page is the master copy. A technical audit checks for missing canonicals, self-referencing canonicals (which are correct), canonicals pointing to non-existent pages, conflicting canonical signals between HTTP headers and HTML tags, and canonical chains where Page A canonicalises to Page B which canonicalises to Page C.
Robots meta directives. Beyond robots.txt, individual pages can use meta robots tags or X-Robots-Tag HTTP headers to control indexing. A technical audit identifies pages with noindex directives that should be indexed, nofollow directives that prevent link equity from flowing through internal links, and contradictory directives between different signal sources.
Duplicate content. Search engines struggle when the same content is accessible at multiple URLs. A technical audit identifies duplicate content caused by www vs non-www access, HTTP vs HTTPS access, trailing slash inconsistencies, URL parameters, session IDs, and print-friendly page versions. Each duplication source requires a specific resolution: redirects, canonical tags, or URL parameter handling.
Rendering and JavaScript
Client-side rendering. Compare the initial response, a rendered browser view and Google's indexed or tested view for representative templates. JavaScript rendering can work, but blocked resources, errors, delayed content and inconsistent links can change what is available. Record the actual difference rather than assuming every client-rendered page is blank.
Structured data. Validate markup syntax, required properties and agreement with visible content against Google's structured-data policies. Relevant markup can establish eligibility for supported appearances, but display is not guaranteed; FAQ results are now largely limited to authoritative government and health sites.
Server and Performance
Response codes. Every URL should return an appropriate HTTP status code. A technical audit maps all response codes across your site: 200 (success), 301/302 (redirects), 404 (not found), 410 (permanently removed), and 5xx (server errors). Each non-200 code requires evaluation — some are intentional and correct, others indicate problems.
Page speed. Review Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint and Cumulative Layout Shift across representative page groups, separating field and lab data. Google's page-experience guidance treats Core Web Vitals as part of broader page experience; a threshold miss alone does not explain a ranking change.
HTTPS and security. SSL/TLS configuration, HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect chains, mixed content, and HSTS headers are all part of a technical audit. Google uses HTTPS as a ranking signal, and browsers display warnings for insecure sites that directly affect user trust and click-through rates.
Why It Matters
Technical SEO issues are uniquely dangerous because they are invisible to most stakeholders and their impact is disproportionate to their apparent severity.
Technical issues block everything downstream. No amount of content optimisation, link building, or conversion rate improvement matters if search engines cannot access, render, and index your pages. A single misconfigured robots.txt directive can negate months of content investment by preventing Google from ever seeing your new pages. Technical SEO is the prerequisite for everything else.
Repeated errors compound. Internal redirect chains add requests for users and crawlers. Count affected links, hops and measured latency, update internal destinations to their final relevant URLs, and verify the result. Do not infer a traffic or PageRank loss from an arbitrary latency or percentage threshold.
Migrations and redesigns create technical debt. Every time your site undergoes a significant change — new CMS, new design, new URL structure, new hosting — technical SEO issues are introduced. Redirect maps are incomplete. Old canonical configurations persist. New templates introduce heading hierarchy problems. Without a post-migration technical audit, this debt goes undetected and slowly erodes your organic performance.
Traffic changes need diagnosis. A core update, seasonality, demand change, reporting difference, technical regression or competitor movement can coincide with a drop. How It Differs From Content Audits
Technical SEO audits and content audits are complementary but distinct. Understanding the difference ensures you invest in the right type of analysis for your situation.
Technical audits examine delivery; content audits examine the answer. A technical review tests status, canonicalisation, rendering, internal discovery and performance evidence. A content review tests accuracy, usefulness, intent and overlap. There is no universal three-second boundary between a technically valid and invalid page.
Technical issues have deterministic solutions. A broken redirect either works or it does not. A canonical tag either points to the right URL or the wrong one. A robots.txt either allows crawling or blocks it. The recommendations from a technical audit are specific and testable: fix this redirect, update this canonical, remove this noindex directive. Content audit recommendations are more subjective: improve the depth of this section, better align with search intent, add more supporting evidence.
Technical audits are tool-driven. Content audits are expert-driven. The majority of technical audit findings can be identified by automated crawling tools. Content quality assessment requires human judgment (or AI that approximates human judgment). A technical audit without tools is impractical. A content audit without expertise is meaningless.
You need both, but fix technical issues first. If your site has both technical and content problems, fix the technical issues before investing in content improvements. There is no point in optimising content that Google cannot crawl. Once the technical foundation is solid, content improvements will have their full intended effect.
When You Need One
Certain situations make a technical SEO audit urgent rather than merely advisable.
Before and after a site migration. Inventory current URLs and benchmarks before a domain, URL, CMS or template change. Validate redirects, canonicals, robots rules, sitemaps, rendered templates and analytics in staging where possible, then crawl and monitor immediately after launch.
After an unexplained traffic decline. Compare like-for-like periods and segment by search type, query, country, device and page. Check tracking and demand before testing deployment, noindex, canonical, response and rendering changes. Use site-specific variance rather than a fixed 10% trigger.
Before a major content investment. If you are planning to produce 50 new pages, launch a content hub, or rebuild your blog, audit the technical foundation first. Publishing content on a site with crawlability problems, broken internal linking, or duplicate content issues means your new content inherits those problems and may never index properly.
When the site is large or complex. Dynamic URLs, multiple hosts, languages, JavaScript rendering and frequent template releases increase review scope. Monitor release-critical signals and schedule deeper audits according to change rate and business risk rather than a page-count or quarterly rule.
When rankings are stagnant. Technical evidence is one possible cause alongside relevance, competition, demand and external signals. Audit the plausible causes and avoid assuming infrastructure is the bottleneck before the data supports it.
